While we were in Liguria I, the Hairy Half, his brother and his sister participated to "storie al chiaro di luna" (history under the moon) a guided tour to Castel Gavone and Fortezza di San Giovanni by night.
The excursion was organized by the Historical Center of Finale and will be held on Fridays until 8 September (you can find the official site with all the information here).

The meeting was in Finalborgo, one of the three units of Finale Ligure, which was the capital of Marchesato di Finale, governed by the Del Carretto Marquis during the Middle Ages and then by Spain in the 17th century. We saw little of the town, but that little was beautiful.

On the other hand, we saw the city from the top of the trail we followed. We had several escorts including a guide.

Our first goal was Fortezza di San Giovanni, a Spanish stronghold built around a Byzantine watchtower where we were met by actors in fifteenth-century dresses, who explained us various elements of the life and politics of the time. They also staged swords baptism, medieval fencing exercises, a duel and some scenes (a pair with sexual jokes not really suitable for the children present).
We were also offered a refreshment with water, wine and focaccia.

After a much steep path, we arrived at our last destination, Castel Gavone, the ancient residence of the Marchesi del Carretto and the largest castle in Liguria. After a speech by an actor who played the Marquis (there were also some guards), we were shown a still working cistern.

Finally we returned to the town where we ate a very good ice cream at Gelateria Centrale in Via Torcelli 28.
It was a beautiful experience that I would definitely recommend to anyone who has the chance to do it.
