In Liguria per borghi medievali e grotte/Liguria: medieval towns and caves

During my stay in Liguria I, my husband, his father and his sister made a motorcycle trip. We already had a motorcycle and we rented the other from Luison.
First we went to Toirano caves (full ticket 13€).
Next to the ticket office there was a small museum with prehistoric artifacts and various skeletal parts and a reconstruction of cave bears.

Even in the caves there are traces of the passage of prehistoric man dating back to the upper Paleolithic (12,000-12,500 years ago): footprints, hand prints and knee prints. The cave was not used as a dwelling because it is too damp, the tracks are related to explorations or rituals.

In addition to the prehistoric traces there are beautiful limestone formations, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and aragonite crystals arranged in flower shapes. The first cave, that of Bàsura, is connected to lower Santa Lucia cave through an artificial tunnel.

After visiting the main caves, we visited the upper cave of Santa Lucia, which houses a sanctuary dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Stalactites and stalagmites, once present, were sold to local nobles to decorate artificial caves. In a near passage there is also the cave used as a hermit home.

Siamo andati a pranzare a Toirano.

We went to have lunch at Toirano. We went to some nearby farmhouses, but they were all closed so when we arrived in town, the only place we found open was Sciuscià and Sciurbì, a cafè in Via Giovanni Battista Parodi 14. The menu was very nice and cheap, the stocks were almost finished so they could only give us a course, ravioli with cuttlefish, tuna, tomato, parsley and olives. Compared to classic cafè food it was very good. The oil in particular was very fragrant, but we were not surprised because the area was full of oil mills.
After eating we made a quick tour of the medieval town, full of alleyways and with a couple of particularly picturesque spots, then went to the Ethnographic Museum of Val Varatella, which ticket was included in the entrance to Toirano caves, excluding a supplement of 1€ per head to visit the upper rooms.
The museum occupies a lot belonging to the municipality that was part of the Counts D'Aste's Palace, then passed to the Del Carretto Marquis of Balestrino. The exhibitions occupy three floors:
on the ground and on the first floors there are eighteen sections dedicated to agriculture, crafts, home life, costume, devotion, local historical aspects of Val Varatella. On the second floor (the ancient Piano Nobile), were reconstructed the rooms of the noble residence. When we visited there was also a nhandmade lace and hand embroidery exibition.

Our next goal was Balestrino. What we were interested in was the old town, abandoned in the 1960s due to the continuous landslides and that until recently were still open to visit. But we found the area blocked with a sign that explained that, because of the rains, buildings were no longer safe and entry was forbidden.

We continued to Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena, a fortified town dating from the eleventh century. The old houses climb up the hill to the castle that gives the name to the country, but that unfortunately it is not accessible.
The village is very picturesque, with ancient washers and ovens protruding from the outer walls.

Our last visit of the day was Zuccarello, another medieval fortified village that developes on a single street with porticos on both sides.
Here was born Ilaria del Carretto, an important character of the nobility of the end of the 14th century.
Another famous feature of Zuccarello, besides the porticos is the bridge over the Neva stream, but the Romanesque bell tower is also worth it.

During the motorcycle trip, in addition to the beautiful views, we also saw a large number of butterflies, goats, donkeys and two deers that crossed the road.
It was a tiring trip, but it was definitely worth it. The most known cities of Liguria, cities are the ones by the sea, but inland there are many wonderful places to explore and I'm going to continue to do so.
